Wonder wants to turn your smartphone into a Nintendo Switch
It’s hard to ignore that the Nintendo Switch has been a riotous success since its March launch, but what about smartphones? With the industry essentially run by Samsung and iPhone, it feels like the lines are blurring between the next ‘biggest thing’.
That’s where Wonder comes in. Currently funded $14 million by such investors as Shakira, Kevin Spacey, and Nolan Bushnell, CEO Andy Kleinman has spent the past two years building his new startup aimed specifically at video game enthusiasts. The company has employees from HTC, Sony, and Activision, with Kleinman himself having worked at Zynga and Scopely.
In a press release earlier this week, Wonder stated that its first project would be “a new type of portable hardware device that might be considered a hybrid between a powerful smartphone and a gaming console.” Though, no further details were shared.
It’s still early days for the company so there’s still a healthy dose of skepticism surrounding the ambitious goals. There’s no telling yet whether it’ll find a gap in the industry or what the device’ll look like, but at least Wonder has a target audience in mind.
